Small Business Server
The good news is that the licensing for Windows Small Business Server 2008 is relatively easy compared to some of their products. One product, one price, and one Client Access License (CAL) - If you follow this model you won't go far wrong. After the initial purchase of the software, which comes with 5 client licenses (CALs), all you have do do is make sure that you have enough CALs to cover the amount of users or devices on your network. The only decision you need to make is whether you want to use the CALs for the total amount of users on your network or the total number of devices and this has to be decided at the installation stage. Normally the user CAL method is used as most small businesses have more than one device per user because of mobile technology and each one would require a license.

If your company requires more than the standard 5 CALs then you need to work out how many users or devices that will be connecting to the company network and purchase in batches of 5 CALs. Microsoft don't sell single CALs so if you have 12 Users or Devices then you need to puchase the standard server license which comes with 5 CALs and then an additional 10 licenses to give you a total of 15 CALs.

The flexibility to mix Standard and Premium CALs as well as discounted upgrades and migrations as your needs grow make also make Windows Small Business Server 2008 licensing more cost-effective than before.
